Giveaway! Sequined Mini Tote Bag {*giveaway closed}

2013 December 9

Happy Monday to You! Today marks the beginning of the 11th Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day and I’m excited to be participating this year. I took some time over the weekend to make up a cute mini tote bag! It’s handmade by me and I would love to keep it… but I love giveaways and appreciate my readers even more (Thank You!) so I’m giving it away! And… even if you don’t win, you can make one too because I will be posting the tutorial for it later on today for Made By Me Monday. *Update: The Mini Tote tutorial is here.

About the prize: (Just picture a lovely lady’s voice from the Shopping Channel…) This lovely mini tote is made using camel-toned fabric with a chocolate velour floral print. It has a stunning sequined stripe on the front and gold corded dupioni silk handles. The lining is made from Rashida Coleman-Hale’s Koi fabric line – Pennants Waving in the Ivory colour-way. It is 9″ wide, 10.5″ tall and 4″ deep. The handle drop (from top of handle to the bag) is 8″. This bag is perfect for that quick trip to the grocery store or fancy enough to dress up a visit to the mall with a friend. Holding all of your necessities and more, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it!

Okay, I am half kidding, but it got the information across and hopefully made you smile. (yes?!)

Here are the details: This giveaway is open internationally (hooray!), and will close at 5pm PST (8pm EST) on Friday, December 13th. The winner will be chosen randomly and I will be posting their name by Dec 15th and shipping the tote bag to the lucky recipient by December 20th.

Here’s how you win:

  • If you would like a second entry – Follow Thread Riding Hood in any of these places: FacebookPinterestInstagramTwitter, Bloglovin’ or Feedly. Let me know you did in the comments!

My favourite holiday memory, as a child, was opening my new Nancy Drew book on Christmas morning and reading it almost non-stop throughout my school vacation. Of course it did not take all my vacation from school to finish the book, but I did spend a lot of time just holding it and marvelling over the nearly unblemished cover. There was nothing like a brand new Nancy Drew book on Christmas morning.

One of my favorite Christmas memories is of selling Christmas trees with my Daddy. He had a big juke box and it played Alvin and the Chipmonks. I always have a smile on my face when I hear the Chipmonks sing, smell the wonderful smell of spruce Christmas trees and smell cigar smoke. Makes me think of Daddy.

So many memories. One of my favorites was my first Christmas away from home. I went to college across country and thought I wouldn’t be able to go home for Christmas. I was sad, but not totally depressed about it because I had a lot of extended family where I was so I knew I wouldn’t be alone. My uncle surprised me by using his frequent flyer miles to send my home for Christmas. The funny thing was, up to that point I wasn’t even sure he liked me. He’s married to my mom’s sister and and I was always afraid of him growing up–don’t know why now :)

We never did a lot of presents growing up because my parents didn’t want it to be about what we could get (something I’m planning on continuing with my own boys!). Instead, we usually took a trip to a Bavarian inspired town about 1.5 hours away. We always had a fancy dinner and got too wander around all the little shops.

Amazing. My favourite is only a couple of years old. I live not far from the National Arboretum here in the UK, and the year before last we went to visit their pre-Christmas illuminations. They flood-lit the trees after dark with different coloured lights and tucked little stalls in along the forest paths selling mulled wine and hot chocolate. That year, we exceptionally had heavy snow before Christmas, and it looked as though we’d stumbled into Narnia! It was just magical.

We went home for Christmas that year. Across three provinces so our 11 month old daughter (first grandchild/niece so it was really important) could have her first Christmas with our family. She was already walking and talking so it was really fun.

I realized Christmas eve morning something was off, did a quick calculation and off to the drug store we went. As you can probably guess, I found I was pregnant. My parents were in grandbaby heaven.

One of my favorites is after we moved to Germany. We didn’t get housing like we thought we would. We were there for 6 weeks when we finally got a house. December 22 they were showing up with boxes and boxes of out stuff. So what is a mom of 2 young kids to do about a Christmas try. She uses military wife ingenuity. She runs to the PX and buys markers, tape, stickers and candy canes. I broke open one of the biggest boxes, taped it to the wall and drew the best Christmas tree I could with a green marker. The kids decorated it with stickers and candy canes taped to it. Not the best tree ever but Santa found his way to leave presents under it. It is a story the kids talk about every year. They are now 22 and 24.

My fave christmas memory is when my dad finally convinced me to try his chocolates that he got every year. (Frangos. Sold in the Bon Marche. Both gone. Boo!) I finally did, and then spent every year afterwards fighting him for the last ones!

During my childhood, the whole extended family would gather at my parents’ house for Christmas. My mom did all the cooking. Sometimes the main dish was turkey, sometimes duck, and once in awhile lutefisk — yum! My grandmother would make lefse — double yum! After dinner I was the designated gift distributor. I would pass them out one at a time so everyone could see what everyone else received. It took awhile, but oh, what fun!

When we were young, 50+ yrs ago, our present from our grandparents was a bag of hard Christmas candy, the ribbon candy, peanuts in the shell, an orange and best of all a brand new 50 cent piece. (back then a full size candy bar was a nickel) Kids today would be appalled, but we were grateful.

Christmas was on a Monday, and my Dad, a pastor, was obviously busy on Sunday so we drove to Grandma’s house on Christmas day. Only the car kept dying (found out later it was an alternator problem) on the 8 hour trip, whenever we stopped or slowed down. We got countless jump starts from friendly passers-by and finally made it to Grandma’s street, where we kids and Mom got out and pushed the final 200 yards.

My favorite memory is the traditional oplatki shared before the Christmas eve dinner. (Oplatki is an eastern european tradition–my family is originally from what is now Slovakia–and you can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_wafer . Now the dinner itself, well, that was a less favorite tradition….it was traditionally boiled potatoes and various types of cold fish…whitefish, salmon, pickled herring, etc. I hated fish (still do), so I basically stuck to boiled potatoes. Still, we opened presents after dinner on Christmas eve, so 2 great memories and one fishy one!

I am hoping this Christmas to create a new favourite memory – I am making 3 of your Thread Riding Hood Super hero capes for my daughter, niece and nephew. I can not wait to see the look on their faces and to watch them play super hero’s on Christmas day with their new capes. Thank you so much for sharing the tutorial and pattern. It is fantastically written and I referred a couple of the girls at sewing last night to your site when they commented on the Capes in progress. I will send you some pictures after Christmas (for you to see, I would rather they not go on your blog).
Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing what I am sure will be another great tutorial and your beautiful bag. The Infomercial voice did make me laugh :)

My favorite holiday memory is when my mom and I immediately started taking pictures of my sister after the Christmas tree had fallen on top of her, instead of helping her get out from under it!

  165. December 13, 2013

One Christmas when I was little (around 4 or 5), we didn’t have very much money and so my Dad had sat us down in our room to explain about no Santa and not getting very much for presents (gave us chocolate pudding to soften the blow too, such a sweetie). Mom was in the living room working on a few little things. Anyway, dad had just finished convincing us that there was no Santa when there was a knock at the door and a loud, jolly “ho, ho, ho!” Then the door closed and we all rushed out…just missing “Santa”. A family friend had known about the situation and didn’t want four little kids to go without Christmas and brought over presents. We were sure it had been Santa and that our dad was “tricking” us!

Growing up my sister, brother and I had our own Christmas morning tradition. Of course we were always the first ones up, at least I was as the youngest. So we all gathered quietly and exchanged our gifts. I remember those early Christmas mornings fondly. And now I sometimes wonder if it was my parent’s idea so they could get some extra sleep!
